Labor Market in August: Job Openings up, but Services Hit Hard

To that end, the most recent Job Openings and Labor Turnover report released Tuesday (Oct. 1) by the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the total, “headline” number of jobs available were up in August — but depending on where you looked, the trends were at best uneven.

The BLS estimated that in August there were about 8 million job openings, a slight boost from the 7.7 million seen in July (which in turn was a number that had been revised upwardly, albeit slightly).

Job openings decreased in services (such as in finance), sliding 93,000 roles, per the government report. Pace of Hiring Relatively UnchangedThe pace of hiring was little changed month over month at 5.
